Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 79, Thurso to Mey.

We left Thuso this morning for our last full day of walking. Thurso is a lovely place with great views out to sea, world class surfing, and also great civic pride, shown in their flower displays. Quite a place!

It was great to see a sign for John O’Groats as we set off. After a short time on a fairly busy road with wide verges we were soon in Castletown known as Flagstone Town! From Castletown we spent the rest of the route on extremely quiet rural roads. This was a day of huge farms with sheep and cows. We also saw evidence of a flagstone wall. We’ve seen quite a few of these recently. Wondering what Maurice and Robin who we met when they were building a drystone wall would make of these?

In the distance we could see Dunnet Head for most of the day. Very difficult to get a good photo of but it really was stunning! We eventually arrived at Castle Mey where we have been told by locals Prince Charles is in residence. We were a bit disappointed he didn’t come out to cheer us on!

Final eight miles tomorrow. Think it’s going to be a bit emotional!
