Today we started our next trail, The Great Glen Way. We headed off from Fort William and near the start of the walk saw a sign advising equestrians to dismount before crossing the bridge. In all the miles we’ve walked this is the first time we have seen a sign like this, clearly we needed to look out for horses! From this path we then joined the Caledonian Canal and one of the first sights we saw was a steam train, not on the canal! It was on the West Highland Line that crosses The Glenfinnan Viaduct made famous in the Harry Potter films.
It was a lovely, peaceful walk along the canal path although we did have some drizzle for most of the morning. A highlight was a set of locks called Neptune’s Staircase. We were lucky to see sailing boats moving through the lock system. After a few miles we came to Gairlochy and crossed the bridge giving us a wonderful view right down the canal. From there we eventually arrived to walk along the shore of Loch Lochy with more amazing views. It was also great weather all afternoon.
It’s been a really lovely day’s walking.
A final treat came when Gwyneth and Andy took us to Glencoe to see it in good weather, when we walked through it was pouring with rain!
The visit was made even more special when they were able to bring it alive with their immense local knowledge. Thank you!
