Day 2, Roncevalles to Zubiri.

We had read in the guide books to expect amazing views today, however, that wasn’t to be as we have had a day of rain and mist!

We left historic Roncesvalles early and it was lovely to look back at the beautiful buildings. Our route today has taken us through a variety of wooded areas, open land and small villages. At lunchtime we found sanctuary from the ever present rain in a church porch in Espinal. The very modern building had many different stained glass windows.

Most of the paths today have been well made and much has been done to improve The Way in recent years. Overall it’s been a good day of walking and we’ve met lots of great people, but the final descent into Zubiri was extremely difficult. The route was along a path with many slippery rocks jutting out and the continual rain of the day meant a stream was also running along it. Certainly a finish that needed much concentration!
