Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 22, Oldbury on Severn to Slimbridge.

Early starts are now the norm. It’s peaceful, calm and means we can set a steady pace to reach our destination in good time.
Weather wise we had strong winds, cloud, sun and rain. Admittedly, not much rain. Twice the full set of waterproofs went on only for the rain to immediately stop.
Today was once again mainly about the stunning Severn estuary. True, the road bridges dominate the landscape and there are two nuclear power plants in the process of being decommissioned, but the scenery is spectacular, the farm fields are a lush green and the Severn Way we are following takes in some splendid villages.
We also walked several miles along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal which runs parallel with the River Severn. It’s without doubt the widest canal either of us have ever seen and is still used to get ‘Tall Ships’ to Gloucester.
This evening has been very special. Paul and Basia Lee are looking after us in their lovely home. It’s been a real treat.

  1. Wot no Q&A? That’s my question.
Can you tell me what condition the tow path on the Sharpness Canal is in please? I am thinking of using it on a cycle ride to Bristol as it seems much better alternative to using the A38.
Have a good day tomorrow, looks like more showers and an opportunity for a few more quick changes. You could do a cabaret quick change act by the end of this trip.
‘Oh no not back on the road again’ I hear you say.
