Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 24, Astorga to Rabanal del Camino.

Astorga has definitely been one of our favourite places to stay. It is a really relaxed and interesting town with beautiful buildings including the cathedral and stunning Palace of Gaudi.

It was such a contrast to very quickly come across a tiny roadside church as we headed out to the mountains for our days walking.

Today has seen a huge change in scenery and a climb to nearly 4,000ft! It has been an incredibly beautiful route with the narrow paths often lined with purple lavender and yellow broom. We’ve also had views of distant mountains nearly all day. We were very happy to pass a sign that told us we only have 246km to go, that means we’ve walked 554km. Great news!

The other big change today has been that there have been lots and lots of trees. It was so good to walk through these on a lovely soft footpath. In this area people had again made crosses to attach to the fence, something we saw on day 8 back in The Rioja Region.

The trail is starting to get busy now. Lots of people come to walk parts of The Camino, often the final part and we are certainly seeing more people each day. It’s such an interesting part of the walk meeting so many different people from all over the world. Some we meet just once, today we met some people we saw on the first day and have only now seen again. Each day is so different!

Early start tomorrow for another long day walking in the mountains. Looking forward to more wonderful views and reaching the highest point of the entire way.
