Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 23, Villar de Mazarife to Astorga.

It was extremely quiet when we set out at 6am this morning.  This is always a lovely time to walk with few people about, but this morning it was just us heading off through the village and then  across the wide open farmland.

The land we crossed is extremely rich with a very wide variety of different crops, some we didn’t recognise! Our path took us through small villages and open countryside for the morning. We even walked beside a railway track and then eventually joined the road. Such a contrast from countryside to busy traffic in one footstep.

The road took us past a huge factory which we learned is where Philidelphia Cheese is made. A totally unexpected part of our day.

In total contrast we then came to the village of Hospital de Orbigo and crossed the magnificent 13th century bridge.

It was then back on a path next to the road to head towards Astorga. When we eventually left the road our route took us up to the hilltop at San Justo de la Vega with its stone Cross. The views to Astorga from here were fantastic.

It has been a long twenty mile walk today and this afternoon was very hot. However it has been very interesting and Astorga is a very beautiful town.
