Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 26, Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo.

Following the rain and cloud cover yesterday today has been a day of sunshine, blue skies, views and vineyards. Lovely!

After a long road walk out of Ponferrada we turned up a track and very soon there were vineyards as far as we could see.

The Camino travels right through the small, historic Bierzo wine region. There were vines of every shape and size and all the wineries seemed much smaller than the Rioja region. We learned that wine in this area has developed hugely in the last fifteen years. The views to the mountains, where we will be going tomorrow were fantastic too.

Finally we are in the village of Villafranca del Bierzo.

  1. Wonderful photos of the vineyards, is the dramatic building part of the estate. Fingers crossed for sunshine here this weekend. Thanks for sharing your journey.

  2. The building is a castle from the 16th century that we saw as we walked into Villafranca. It is still inhabited today by descendants of the original family. It is privately owned and is said to be in excellent condition because it has always been lived in.
