Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 30, Sarria to Portomarin.

So today The Camino became really busy. Sarria has a train station and we have learned that this is where all the people walking the final 100km into Santiago arrive and join the trail. At times it has become quite congested but things soon thin out and you can find lots of space again. We’ve also met more really interesting people.

With the increase in people there are more rest stops and even vending machines. There are also lots of places for messages to be left to fellow travellers or just personal thoughts about The Camino.

The weather and paths have been great and the views spectacular but the main highlight was a sign telling us we had less than 100km to go!

Our route has taken us through lots of small working farms. Many have small vegetable plots and many have cows. We saw lots of horroes which are grain stores built on stilts to keep rodents out. Many of them were very ornate and are a particular feature of the Galicia region.

Finally we are in Portomarín, an extremely interesting town. In 1962 when The Belesar Reservoir was built, the whole town was moved further up the mountain. It is amazing that they moved and rebuilt some of the original buildings including the 12th century Romanesque church.

It’s been an extremely interesting day!
