Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 34, Sandbach to Dutton Locks.

It’s been a long, tough, wet day. We always knew this would be one of the hard days and it didn’t disappoint!

We set off in rain through the leafy streets of quiet Sandbach and headed back onto the Trent and Mersey Canal. All flat today with very few locks but still quite a lot of narrow boats along the way. The canal passed through rural areas all day until we came upon the huge salt factory. There was an absolute mountain of salt next to it!

We briefly left the canal in the Northwich area and tried to follow the The Dane Valley Way. Unfortunately quite a lot of it was very overgrown with disappearing paths. We found our way through though and rejoined the canal and were lucky to see a heron on her nest.  Northwich was certainly highly

decorated for the jubilee.

As always, there is a reward at the end of the day and ours is to be staying at the very remote and picturesque Dutton Locks. We had to pass over a river bridge with the great view of a railway viaduct ahead to reach our destination.
