Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 35, Dutton Locks to Warrington.

Our stay last night was in a beautiful remote area close to Dutton Locks. It was lovely to start the day walking across fields back towards the Trent and Mersey Canal which we’ve walked on for 5 days. We soon came to the very well known Preston Brook tunnel. We started seeing signs for this over 40 miles ago! The tunnel is over a kilometre long, it is straight and if you look closely at the picture you can see there is literally ‘ light at the end of the tunnel’. We couldn’t walk through it and so had to go over the top along a lush green lane. When we rejoined the canal it became the Bridgewater Canal.

We headed along this canal on fantastic paths towards Warrington. There was a real contrast between the beautiful green canal and the chemical works and power station in the distance.

Our journey today finished by walking right through the middle of Warrington. We crossed the Manchester Ship Canal and the mighty Mersey River. Also passed Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed in!

It’s been a real day of contrasting landscapes.

  1. Terrific that you have got to Warrington so soon after leaving our house. If anyone had ever suggested walking to Warrington from here I would have told them it couldn’t be done in a human lifetime. Well done both of you.

  2. Great progress glad the weather a little better for you. Thanks Kevin yes it answers the question.
