Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 69, Muir of Ord to Alness.

A very different day today from the past weeks on well known Highland trails. From now on we are following our own route as we head ever further North!

Today started with a short walk along an A road with plenty of wide verges. This took us over The River Conan where we saw Salmon leaping in this magnificent river. From here we quickly joined the much quieter roads which are designated cycle routes. We hardly saw any cyclists though! This road was extremely quiet and gave us our first glimpses of the stunning Cromarty Firth. These glimpses soon became constant and we walked with beautiful views of  the sea for many miles. The bridge across was a particular highlight, it measures 1464 metres and has certainly reduced journey times from Inverness to the far North of Scotland. We could also see Oil Rigs, apparently these are brought in to this area for things such as maintenance or decommissioning. Alongside these were also cruise ships going into Invergordon. It definitely made for an interesting walk. Beyond Cromarty Firth we also had wonderful views of the area known as The Black Isle.

The final part of our walk was into Alness on a fantastic cycle path, again with very few cyclists but a very welcome end to the day for us. Rest day tomorrow.

  1. Scenery inspiring as ever. Enjpyed seeing the logging pictures. Must have been good to see the salmon and red squirrel. A big bonus would be see a wildcat. Hopefully no problem with midges.

  2. Great to see you back on track and I’m loving the Scottish scenery. Loved the Cromarty Firth when Ian did his bike ride. Hope you’ve had a good rest day.
