Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 9, Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

We left the Rioja region today with our final views of vineyards also looking towards the distant mountains.

The type of arable land we have previously walked through soon reappeared, with the red soil of the Rioja region replaced by bright greens and yellows.

The Camino is sometimes very isolated and you can walk for a long time without access to water or refreshments. However, often, just when you are most tired an amazing pop up stall seems to appear. There are frequently also different types of signs in towns, this one was a metal cut out of a pilgrim just as we entered Ciruena.Along the whole route there have been many signs showing how far we still have to travel. Today’s showed us we have 581km to go. The good news is, that means we have covered a quarter of the trail already! It’s amazing how the scenery changes every day and today was one of the most dramatic. We felt as if we almost crossed a line and the vineyards finished and we returned to a previous type of farm land.

Rest day tomorrow, washing, planning, shopping and zzzz! No blog tomorrow, but we’ll be walking again on Sunday.

  1. Looks fantastic so pleased the weather has improved how lovely to walk in the cool of the early mornings. Enjoy your well earned rest tomorrow. Still very cold here 4 degrees this morning!

  2. I was wondering if you were planning to rest as it’s such a long way. Lovely following the adventure. Hope you’ve had a good rest day

    1. We’ve got two more rest days planned. Apart from the obvious rest we do our laundry, reflect on our journey so far, focus on the next sections, replenish supplies and explore the place we’re in.
