Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 18, Calzadilla de la Cueza to Sahagun.

We were treated to another beautiful sky as we left Calzadilla this morning.

Our route took us through more farmland where we saw some extremely well preserved circular barns.

Shortly after this feature came the real highlight of the day, Terradillos de Los Templarios. This is famous as it was a major stronghold of The Knights of the Templar, well known for protecting pilgrims on the route. We were surprised there is no mention of this in the village.

However, we had more reason to be excited, this is the official halfway village, that’s 250 miles completed! Our route then took us to Moratinos and houses made in a very traditional way using mud, straw and stones.

The village also had a traditional old wine store with individual family owned stores. What a village, and it only has a population of 59!

To make the village even more special, as we were walking through we came across knitted flags to represent many countries. Certainly a feature of The Camino is all the different nationalities of people walking it.

This has been a day of walking through areas that seem to have been, often untouched by the 21st century. The area is so different to The Rioja region, now we are just seeing small rural hamlets with limited facilities and very few nods to tourism.

This has still been a day of working farms but often much smaller paths.

Finally we are in Sahagan, a town with old buildings, a bullring, many churches and luckily for us a laundrette. Rest day tomorrow!
