Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 37, Wigan to Rufford.

A different start to today when we passed two iconic locations. First of all Wigan Pier, initially made famous by jokes by comedians. Later it was in the title of a George Orwell book, The Road To Wigan Pier. Actually this is probably not the site of the original ‘pier’ but the area is now given this name. Unfortunately it has fallen into disrepair but great that it is the focus of a regeneration project.  Secondly we passed Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club who unusually share the ground with Wigan Athletic Football Club. Once again we couldn’t get in!

For most of the day we have followed The Leeds Liverpool Canal again. It’s been really interesting to see so many broad beam canal boats on here. This seems to be because this is one of the wider canals. As has become very familiar we walked under the M6! Later it was great to see a sign for Lancashire, our eighth county.

Another real highlight of the day was spotting The Pennines in the distance to the East. For Spine Race people….Kevin was clearly eager to run over and set up the summer checkpoints!

Our day has finished in lovely Rufford where we met up with Sandra and Tony who had collected and dropped off our bags. Thanks again!
