Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 42, Lancaster to Burton in Kendal.

To slightly misquote The Proclaimers….We have walked just over 500 miles, and we will walk just under 500 miles more! Just over half way, woohoo!

It was lovely today that Sarah and Andy from The Spine Race walked with us from Lanaster to Carnforth. We rejoined The Lancaster Canal, sometimes known as the black and white canal as it used to transport limestone and coal. The start to the walk saw the canal travel over the hugely impressive Lune Viaduct. An amazing structure crossing The River Lune.

The walk then took us through lovely Hest Bank with great views across Morecambe Bay towards Grange Over Sands. It was then onto Bolton Le Sands for a cake and coffee stop! Finally we left the canal at the well known town of Carnforth. Thank you so much for travelling to walk this stretch of the canal with us. It was certainly a really interesting and picturesque section. Great to chat about different adventures too!

We then had a short walk up the A6 to rejoin the canal at Tewitfield. This section is called The Northern Reaches and is non navigable. It was a great section to walk but locks had become waterfalls and it was clear narrowboats could no longer move along it.

To finish off a great day we were very excited to see a sign for Cumbria, our ninth county.

  1. Can’t believe you have walked all the way to Cumbria! No stopping on the beer boat for you Kevin!! Enjoy the Lakes.

  2. I told Sally not to mention The Beer Boats. Too late now the damage has been done or did you build in a couple of days out for ‘boating’ I wonder?

  3. Absolutely amazing to have walked 500 miles I can remember staying with you in Manchester and we drove to the lakes for a day out. I’m sure Janet was with us?

    1. I was and I was talking to Janet about it on Sunday. Think we went to Bowness. I have the photographic evidence somewhere.

  4. Lovely to see you both and be part of your adventure. Congratulations on being over half way!
