Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 44, Garth Row to Shap.

We set off from lovely Garth Row knowing we had a wonderful day of fell walking ahead of us. Very different to all the canal walking we’ve been doing, with lots of ascent.

We initially followed Dry Lane and very unusually this footpath took us through the remote Selside School Playground. Certainly a beautiful setting for a school. The path then took us down to cross the A6 and then came the steep ascent to Shap Fell reaching our highest point so far of 1,500ft. As we climbed out of the valley we came across free range chickens. Their hutch was certainly ‘des res’ with pretty good views!

It’s been a really hot day and so finding shade for breaks was a must. We were lucky to find some at a shepherds hut and the well known Shap Fell Bothy.

It’s certainly been a day of amazing scenery with views of The Lakes and The Pennines. Including the iconic Kidsty Pike, the highest point on The Coast to Coast and Cross Fell, the highest point on The Pennine Way. We’ve walked both of these.

Finally we walked along the A6 into Shap, a place we’ve stayed several times before.
