Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 48, Carlisle to Gretna Services.

It’s been a very exciting and different sort of day. The streets were very quiet when we left Carlisle early this morning. It definitely felt very different to being out in the middle of the day! The red stone of yesterday continued in a variety of different buildings and our route took us along and over the River Eden.

The main aim of the day however was to cross the infamous and unimaginatively named Metal Bridge. This meant walking along the side of a road, without pavements, that shares a bridge over the River Esk with the A74M. As you can imagine this was extremely noisy but luckily not too busy. We were fortunate we came on a Sunday morning. At this point we also left the M6 behind!

We then followed this road towards Gretna and were very excited to cross the border into Scotland. Also into our tenth county of Dumfries and Galloway. The moment was made even more exciting when Kevin’s brother David and niece Orla arrived. We knew they were meeting us but to arrive just as we crossed into Scotland was very special. It was lovely to all walk together to Gretna Green for lunch and then on to our final destination. Thank you so much for travelling so far to see us, we really appreciate it.

  1. It was fantastic to see you both – you are looking so well. Enjoy the next 440 miles – I would say you are almost there – but you are not😂 some great places to see on the final push – very envious for the rest of your journey.

  2. As you travel north I am reminded of a visitor we had when we lived in Byrness in early 1960. It was a Dr Barbara Moore, a well known marathon walker and health enthusiast who was doing your journey but travelling south.
I remember we gave her honey in water for refreshment
which was a staple part of her diet. I am not sure how she came to us but she had a less welcome reception from one of the other villagers who produced a shotgun thinking she was German. She was also a Breatharian believing you can survive without food.
    No Premier Inns then!
