Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 49, Gretna Services to Lockerbie.

When we planned our route we knew there would be the section of road walking we have started today. It means spending three days on small roads next to the motorway. Luckily it is a very quiet road that passes through magnificent Scottish countryside. Much of it today has been dairy farmland with a small amount of arable.

We initially headed out towards the small village of Kirkpatrick Flemming. The views as we left saw us looking back towards the fells of North Cumbria in the distance. We then walked through Kirtlebridge where we saw many of the single storey houses we were to see throughout the day. It was then on to the larger village of Ecclefechan. The view back towards it was lovely.

There have also been lovely wild flowers in some places along road. These and the beautiful views have certainly made a day of road walking very interesting. We had a great chat with a lady from Australia who was cycling from the north of Scotland, through England to the south of France. This made our adventure seem very short!

Today’s  finish was just south of Lockerbie.
