Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 51, Beattock to Abington.

It been a long tough day with lots of ascent. We started back on the road we left yesterday but this time the road was largely through commercial forestry which dominated the views. This road has very few vehicles on but is very noisy as it runs parallel to the motorway and main train line. Our morning break saw our first encounter with the infamous midges. We had wondered when they were going to show up!

The main climb of today was up to Beattock Summit. The Scottish equivalent of Shap Fell or as people from Scotland may say Shap Fell is the English equivalent of Beattock Summit! Either way, we much prefer Shap Fell, it definitely has better views. On our way up we were excited to see a sign for South Lanarkshire, our eleventh county.

As we continued our journey the views began to be dominated by wind turbines. These were from The Clyde Wind farm, it turns out this is one of the biggest operating wind farms in Europe.

When we eventually left the road  we had a lovely walk through the village of Crawford. This was followed by walking along a track through the beautiful Clyde Valley with views back towards Crawford. We also crossed The Clyde River, we are going to see a lot of this in two days time!
