Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 52, Abington to New Lanark.

When we planned the route we always knew we would make changes along the way. Today was one of those days! As we arrived at our destination yesterday we thought our way out looked very busy. So we had another good look at the map and found an amazing cycle path and also a very quiet road that eventually joined The Clyde Walkway. It has proved to be a great decision.

We set off along the cycle path that stretched out for eight miles. A really good path. It was interesting to see the wind turbines gradually disappear into the distance although we have found they have been replaced by more individual turbines dotted around.

Our route then took us along an incredibly quiet road with wide open views in all directions. Initially the area was used for farming of cows but this later turned to sheep and arable. The farms were certainly very large and dotted all around the countryside. Everything was very very quiet,  our lunch stop was very peaceful with great views. No bench though!

After following a very small track we joined The River Clyde and crossed it for the second time on our adventure. The route then took us along The Clyde Walkway, the section we walked today is called The Clyde Falls. We were high up on the cliffs and it was amazing to see and hear The Clyde thundering down the valley. The power of this water is eventually harnessed by Bonnington Power Station.

All in all a lovely day’s walking and we’re very pleased we made the route change.

  1. It must be nice to be off the busy roads, cycle ways are improving all over the country. Hopefully the weather will stay fine for the next few days.
    Incredible progress.
