Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 53, New Lanark to Strathclyde.

It’s been one of our longest walks today and we have followed The Clyde Walkway for almost  the entire route. The trail is very mixed terrain with lots of up and down. We initially walked past the impressive New Lanark Mill buildings, a UNESCO world heritage site with a very interesting history. Then it was out to the river, one minute we seemed to be right next to The Clyde and then very quickly right up in the tree tops. A great workout, especially in today’s heat!

The walk then continued on paths through farmland. It was here that we met our first ‘End to Ender’ of the entire trip. Griffin was walking  JOGLE, we were able to swap information about the different parts of the route we had covered. Unfortunately at the exact same time as we met Griffin we also met a herd of cows that had escaped from a field and so we didn’t chat for too long! We managed to ‘encourage’ the cows back into their home and made a swift exit for our onward journey!

The way forward was sometimes quite overgrown and there were broken bridges and boardwalks but also some lovely views and good paths in places.

Finally we arrived in Strathclyde and realised we were in our twelfth county, North Lanarkshire. We walked past Strathclyde Loch which is artificial and  has been a venue for The Commonwealth Games and World rowing championships. An interesting finish to the day.
