Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 6, Estella to Los Arcos.

We have had a great day of walking with lovely wide paths and far reaching views all day. This has meant we arrived in Los Arcos early this afternoon.

Our route has taken us through farmland and many vineyards. These have often been large commercial operations.

The highlight of the day has definitely been the iconic wine fountain. Everyone has heard of water fountains but at Bodegas Irache there is a fountain where you actually have a choice of water or wine. A difficult decision at 8 ‘o’clock in the morning! The fountain is here as monks used to serve the pilgrims wine when this building was previously a monastery. When this closed in 1985 the tradition continued with the fountain in place.

We’re planning a very early start tomorrow for the long walk to Logrono to try to complete as much as possible when it is cooler.

  1. It looks wonderful and the weather looks fabulous, it’s cold and wet here. Thought the sculpture of the pilgrims was very moving the other day. Have to say the wine fountain sounds interesting 😀
