Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 74, Crask Inn to Altnaharra.

We left Crask in beautiful sunshine this morning after a lovely peaceful time in the remote Inn. It had been very special to stay in such an isolated area.

Our route today continued along the ever quiet A836. We climbed uphill away from Crask and soon came to the new Creag Riabhach wind farm that is being constructed. To bring the wind turbines in local roads have been widened and an actual new temporary road has been created. We were told by locals these changes will all be restored to their original state once construction is finished.

As we moved along the road today we were treated to so many amazing views. To our right we could see the mountain Ben Klibreck with Meall nan Con it’s highest point, , the second most northerly Munro. We had a chat with the only person we have seen walking today who was heading up to bag this Munro in today’s beautiful weather. Didn’t think we had time to join him!

We then came to Altnaharra, a very small village. The school has been mothballed as it only had one pupil. We read also that the church roof has fallen in and so this is also closed. They don’t seem to be having much luck!

As we had made good time today we walked four extra miles. This section was the the quietest we have walked with no buildings at all. It was, however, stunningly beautiful with views in every direction. We were still in Flow Country and everything seemed very green with only occasional small lochs breaking up the scenery. This wide open landscape is just so unspoilt and an absolute privilege to walk through.
