Janet and Kevin’s Very Big Walk

Day 75, Altnaharra to Tongue.

We rejoined the A836 for our final full day of walking Northwards, before heading East tomorrow. The views continued to be as spectacular as yesterday and we were lucky the sun was, once again, shining. The blue sky was only broken up by the perfect white clouds with their shadows moving across the landscape.

We soon came to Inchkinloch Bridge and crossed Lon Achadh na h-Aibhne. There was a very old small building and sheep fold nearby. The first constructions we have seen for many miles! We then quickly came to the very beautiful Loch Loyal. This loch is four miles long and half a mile wide. At this time of year it is also home to rare black-throated divers. The road followed the loch for it’s entire length, certainly one of the most picturesque roads we have ever been on!

Just as were leaving Loch Loyal on our right we saw the distant, but magnificent sight of the summit of Ben Hope on our left. This is the most northerly Munro.

Finally we came to the view we had been looking forward to all day, the sea! As we rounded the Tongue headland we could see not only The Kyle of Tongue but also the open sea  beyond.

  1. Fantastic views and great that the weather is on your side. May be you are there at just the right time and your unplanned and unfortunate delay has a silver lining.

  2. Good to see you enjoying good weather in one of the best parts of Scotland in terms of scenery. I recommend Ben Hope if you have time after you finish. Stunning views from the top in all directions.
